Streptomycin sulfate
Indications/Uses
TB (including miliary & meningeal). Surgical intervention in TB patients. Gonorrhea, subacute bacterial endocarditis, brucellosis w/ bacteremia, UTI, peritonitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM TB 1 g 2-3 times wkly or daily. Miliary & meningeal TB 1 g daily, may require 2-3 g daily in divided doses. P-aminosalicylic acid 12 g daily in divided doses or INH 300 mg daily in divided doses should be given concomitantly. Surgical intervention in TB patients 1 g daily for 2-7 days pre-op. Continue post-op for 14-28 days or more if needed. Gonorrhea 1 inj of 0.3-0.5 g. Subacute bacterial endocarditis 2 g daily in divided doses for a min of 6 wk. Brucellosis w/ bacteremia 1 g 12 hrly for 1 wk, then 1 g daily for the 2nd wk. UTI 1-2.5 g daily for 5-7 days. Peritonitis due to gm -ve bacilli 2-2.5 g daily in divided doses for 7-14 days.
Special Precautions
Overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, particularly monilia. May cause disturbances of vestibular function. Possible development of tinnitus & hearing loss. Perform audiometric tests before, at the end of 4 mth & at 2 mth interval thereafter during, & for 6 mth after treatment. May exacerbate illness w/ possible shock in gm -ve infections w/ bacteremia. Impaired renal function. Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, skin eruptions, paresthesias of the face & head, conjunctive & renal irritation. Vertigo, blurred vision, or other vestibular dysfunction.
